Prof. Stijn Franken
Stijn Franken (1967) studied law in Tilburg. He then obtained his PhD at the university of that city in 1993, to be sworn in as a lawyer in The Hague later that year. He has since focused on legal assistance in criminal matters. In 1998 he became a lawyer in Amsterdam. Since 2003 he has also been a professor of criminal (procedural) law at Utrecht University. He is also a member of the Closed Criminal Affairs Advisory Committee, a board member of the Dutch Lawyers Association and a member of the Association of Cassation Lawyers in Criminal Matters. In addition, he is regularly asked to provide legal assistance in disciplinary cases. He combines his practice with an appointment as professor of criminal (procedural) law at Utrecht University. He looks for challenges in particularly (legally) complicated cases - in the field of financial-economic criminal law and in the field of so-called common criminal law.
Stijn Franken has registered the following principal legal practice areas in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister):
Criminal law
Cassation (criminal law)
Based on this registration, he is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in each registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
